The Central Lions Club of Bellingham recently donated automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to Bellingham, Sehome and Squalicum high schools, a gift worth $4,500.

AEDs are used in situations of cardiac distress to help individuals' hearts reestablish effective rhythms. They are useful in places where large numbers of people gather, such as for athletic events or assemblies. AEDs use voice prompts, lights and text messages to tell the rescuer the steps to take. The units are meant to provide immediate emergency medical response until a victim can be transported to a hospital and/or treated by emergency medical technicians.

The Central Lions will be honored by the Bellingham School District School Board on June 25, receiving a Shining Star award for its generous donation.
