Information for families of current eighth graders: Families with students attending high school next school year and plan to participate in summer activities (sports practice or clubs) are required to have an Eligibility Packet for Co-Curricular Activities packet completed and on file at the high school before the end of the year. (Students planning to participate in athletes need to request physicals to be copied and sent to their respective school.) Packets are available for pick-up and drop-off in our office with Mrs. Davis.
Parent Advisory Council: April's PACS agenda focused on 3 keys areas: (1) A presentation on the anticipated state budget, and the resulting need to identify ways to pull together as a community in support of our schools dominated the meeting. Of great significance would be cuts to I-728 funding, which is used to reduce class sizes, professional development, summer school, and extended learning opportunities. Please check the district web site for budget information updates. Options to provide middle school athletics programs are still being investigated by the District, perhaps in conjunction with the City of Bellingham through Parks & Recreation Department. Alternative funding to continue professional development for teacher is also being sought. (2) Parents are strongly encouraged to consider sitting as a panelist for culminating project (CP) presentations. The range of topics and depth of knowledge demonstrated by the HS seniors is impressive, and it is a wonderful opportunity to learn first-hand what the CP is all about. The potential for matching service gaps at district school with possible CP projects (i.e., arts projects for elementary student) was discussed. (3) A major undertaking within the district is to align the schedules within and between middle and high schools to facilitate inter-school collaboration and extended learning opportunities. Implementation is projected for the 2010-2011 school year in order to work through concerns such as transportation and capacity. Once in place the potential for increased student access to individual classes and flexibility for instructors and programs was apparent to us all and created a great deal of excitement.
ASB Fundraising: ASB would like to thank all of the students who made our February and March fundraising activities such a success! At the February social, ASB sold root beer floats and raised $178.00 for the Alternative Humane Society of Whatcom County. For two weeks in March, we collected spare change and bills for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and its "Pennies for Patients" drive. Thanks to your generosity, we collected an amazing $908.40 to help kids in our community. Thank you for your support and listen to announcements for more opportunities to help out our local community!
Site Council News from March 26, 2009 (recorded by Anne Welsh, submitted by Gail Knops): Site council minutes and other information are posted on the FMS website under More Info. -Report from Deirdre O'Neill re: requests for transfers into FMS from district kids (#3 so far) -General discussion re: improving communication from site council to parents and PTSA. Kitty, Anne and Gail will further discuss how to get ideas and feedback from parents and PTSA and also give information back. Also discussed getting student input into site council. -Long discussion on Professional Learning Communities - These are small groups of teachers with a similar subject matter who work together. Their focus is evaluating student work and student learning that is taking place in each other's classrooms. The funding for this is unsure for next year. The teachers find it very helpful. -Update of IB investigation. Several staff recently evaluated an excellent IB school in Montreal and were very impressed by what they saw. They are continuing to pursue this as a possibility for the future. -Discussion for future topics - Cell phone policy, iPod policy, discipline. The next meeting is May 7, 3:15 pm in Conference room A. Topics planned are: Community -School resources; follow-up District Math Task Force report; joint meeting with Sehome Site Council regarding substance abuse.

PTSA News: 8th Grade Celebration Attention...Parents of 8th Grade Students: We are working to plan and organize the traditional year-end events for 8th grade students and need your help! The events include the Picnic on June 16, and an "end of middle school" ceremony followed by an 8th grade students only party on June 17. We are seeking parents who would like to be a part of planning and/or carrying out the details related to these three events. We'll need ideas, decorations, food, games, etc. Talk to your 8th grader for input! We'd like these events to be fun for all! Also, we have a small budget provided by the PTSA but much of the expenses related to these events comes from parent donations. Donations of $5-10 would be greatly appreciated! Checks made payable to "FMS PTSA" can be dropped off in the school office "Celebration" box. Please contact Gennie Clawson (bgclawsons@msn.com) or Kerri Sloan (kerriandpaul@comcast.net) for more information.
PTSA Calendar: 4/30 - The PTSA is proud to present an EVENING OF THE ARTS. This family event will be Thursday, April 30th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. It is a celebration of Fairhaven MS talent, featuring artwork, stage performances and scrumptious desserts. Save the date!
Fitness Gear & Training will be donating $1,000 per every 10 registrants to the Bellingham School District, to be allocated for after school programs. To combat the impact that the recession has had on after school programs, and help promote community health and fitness awareness amongst children and adults alike, Fitness Gear & Training will donate $1,000 for every 10 registrars to commemorate the kick-off of our Forever FITT Outdoor Bootcamps that will begin May 1st. Camps will take place Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6am, 9am, and 6pm and Saturdays at 10am. All Bellingham School District generated registrations between now and May 31st will qualify for the donation.
Challenge Run: The Challenge Run/Walk event held between the four middle schools is coming up soon. Now is the time to enter your artwork in the t-shirt design contest. Pick up a form with all the details about the design contest in the PTSA room. The deadline to submit your artwork is May 13th.
* Students: Would you like to design the cover for this year’s school yearbook? You could be the design contest winner for 2008-2009. So what do you have to do to enter a design for the yearbook cover? It’s simple, be creative and design a cover that includes the school name, the year, and a design that represents the school. It could include the school mascot, activities, the building, anything you feel best depicts life and times at Fairhaven Middle School. Your design must be completed on 8.5 X 11 white paper and could be in color or black and white. All cover designs are due in the office by Thursday, April 30. * If you have not received your magazine subscription from our Fall Fundraiser magazine drive, please contact: Christopher W.
