2009 Middle School Challenge Event Needs Volunteers! The 5th Annual Greater Bellingham Middle School Challenge Event will be held on Saturday, June 13th at Whatcom Falls Park. The start time will be 10:00a.m. This event serves every year as a friendly fitness challenge between the four Bellingham area middle schools including Fairhaven, Kulshan, Shuksan and Whatcom. The course is 2.3 miles in length and students can choose to either walk or run this distance. The school with the most participants is awarded the Challenge Cup Trophy. All kids who participate get colorful event t-shirts, Competitor Ribbons, refreshments and the opportunity to win one of over 100 prizes donated by local merchants. Fairhaven has won this event the past two years and last year we set a new event record with 124 kids crossing the finish line. Volunteers are needed to help with this year's event by serving as trail monitors, providing refreshments or helping out with registration. If you are interested in volunteering or simply wish to get more information about this event please contact Bob Lazzar-Atwood at bobkaren@q.com.
State Science Fair For the second year in a row, students in Bellingham’s Highly Capable Learners’ Program swept the awards at the Washington State Science Fair. Local students started their projects in September, choosing and researching their own topics, which ranged from pendulums to body image to insect research. Each student was responsible for writing a background paper, developing a question and hypothesis, and designing an experiment. They generated and evaluated their data, wrote a discussion and prepared a display board outlining their work. Finally, they were responsible for an oral presentation. Congratulations to Kenneth Brown, Lizzie Crandall, Emily Pittis, Brent Schroeter and Sarah Welsh for representing Fairhaven Middle School. You may see the trophy in the display case near room 316.
PTSA News:
8th Grade Celebration Attention...Parents of 8th Grade Students: We are working to plan and organize the traditional year-end events for 8th grade students and need your help! The events include the Picnic on June 16, and an "end of middle school" ceremony followed by an 8th grade students only party on June 17.
We are seeking parents who would like to be a part of planning and/or carrying out the details related to these three events. We'll need ideas, decorations, food, games, etc. Talk to your 8th grader for input! We'd like these events to be fun for all!
Also, we have a small budget provided by the PTSA but much of the expenses related to these events comes from parent donations. Donations of $5-10 would be greatly appreciated! Checks made payable to "FMS PTSA" can be dropped off in the school office "Celebration" box. Please contact Gennie Clawson (bgclawsons@msn.com) or Kerri Sloan (kerriandpaul@comcast.net) for more information.
PTSA Calendar: 4/30 - Evening of the Arts (details to come)

This family event will be Thursday, April 30th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. It is a celebration of Fairhaven MS talent, featuring artwork, stage performances and scrumptious desserts. Save the date!
* Students: Would you like to design the cover for this year’s school yearbook? You could be the design contest winner for 2008-2009. So what do you have to do to enter a design for the yearbook cover? It’s simple, be creative and design a cover that includes the school name, the year, and a design that represents the school. It could include the school mascot, activities, the building, anything you feel best depicts life and times at Fairhaven Middle School. Your design must be completed on 8.5 X 11 white paper and could be in color or black and white. All cover designs are due in the office by Thursday, April 30.
