Our school is incredibly fortunate because every one of our staff members and community volunteers are dedicated and committed to providing all of our students with the highest quality education so that our students can be ready for college, career and citizenship. This month, our Site Council had a meeting and reviewed the nominations for our Annual Awards and selected 3 people who work in our school community to receive this special recognition. It is our honor to announce to our school the winners for this year's annual awards: The Site Council has chosen Mrs. Melinda Nelson as Alderwood's Classified Staff Member of the year. Mrs. Nelson works in the resource room and on the playground to help all our students enjoy school and learn to their highest potential. She goes the extra mile by attending all of our evening events as well, just to spend more time with our students. We are fortunate to have such a caring and dedicated member of our staff, willing to go above and beyond the expectations to create a meaningful learning environment for our students. Mrs. Andrea Quigley has been selected as this year's Alderwood Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Quigley demonstrates excellence in her job in so many ways. She is committed to the achievement and academic growth of all students in the Alderwood Community. She is continually learning, refining her instructional practices and carefully monitoring all her students' growth. She also serves on a number of school teams that help our entire school continuously improve. We are fortunate to benefit from Mrs.Quigley's leadership, vision, and ability to create synergy. Her efforts help our entire school improve. Parent, Tina Neher has been selected as this year's Alderwood Community Partner/Volunteer of the Year. Tina has worked at Alderwood as a volunteer in our Family Information Center for many years at Alderwood. Each week, Tina comes in to assist countless families in need of help. Each week she also helps prepare Friday home folders, make copies for teachers and do the laminating. Aside from all she does for the Alderwood Community, Tina takes time to talk to students as they eat lunch or go through the hallways. So many of our home engagement efforts have been possible because of Tina's efforts. This week, we will show our appreciation for Mrs. Quigley, Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Neher. Monday will be Mrs. Quigley Appreciation Day, Wednesday will be Mrs. Nelson Appreciation Day and Friday will be Tina Neher Appreciation Day. We encourage our entire school community to help us show our appreciation on these days for these award winners. State Testing Every spring, the state tests all students in grades 3-8 and 10 to make sure their learning is on track. The results from this testing are important to us all. During state testing, most students take the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). That will not change in 2009, ALL students will still need to take the WASL in the spring. Families should continue to encourage their children to do their best on the state test this year. The WASL will be replaced in 2010 by two new tests: the measurements of Student Progress (MSP) in grades 3-8 and the High School Proficiency Exams (HSPE). Those tests are in development and will be unveiled in spring 2010. If students pass one or more sections of the high school WASL this year, they will not be required to take the new HSPE in the same content area (s). If you have questions or concerns about your child's learning, please contact your child's teacher or school. To learn more about the state's testing system, please click here for more info.
