Happy New Year to all our Fairhaven families! Wow, 2008 sure went out with a mess! I hope that all of you are safe and that your various December holidays were special. Due to the short hours of daylight, winter seems to be a natural time for increasing one's reading. We want to encourage you to take advantage of those long hours of darkness by curling up as a family and reading a book together.

What to do when the weather is bad:
Changes in school and bus schedules are usually announced at 6:00 A.M. Local radio and TV stations are alerted immediately when any changes to the school schedule occur. In addition, a recording is placed on the district's main phone line, 676-6400, and electronic access is provided on the Internet: schoolreport.org/ and enter "Bellingham" for school district name. Please do not call the Transportation Office because they need to keep their phone lines open for emergencies

Geography Bee

Vision, Hearing and Scoliosis Screening for Seventh Grade Students:
One out of every 10 persons has SCOLIOSIS!
On January 15th vision and hearing screenings will be done on 7th grade students. In addition, Mrs. Wisner, RN, our School Nurse, will be checking seventh grade students for "scoliosis". Scoliosis is a deformity of the spine that can appear when a child begins their rapid growth spurt.

This procedure, required by state law and done with all seventh grade students, is a simple one involving only a visual examination of the spine. If scoliosis is suspected, you will be notified so that you can obtain a physician's evaluation.

Math Competition
It's math season at Fairhaven and teams will be forming in January. We will be participating in both the county and the state Math Championship competitions. Please plan to come to an informational meeting immediately after school on Thursday January, 8th in Room 309. Complete information about practice sessions, competition dates, and fees will be distributed at this meeting.
Practice sessions will be in the evening this year--Tuesday evenings from 6:30 until 8:00. Coaching staff will include Sehome students who were top-level competitors during their years at Fairhaven. So, if you've been on a math team before or if you've always wanted to be on one, we're looking forward to seeing you.

Student Agenda
LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER
My library is open from 8:00 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. It is a place for quiet reading and study. I will remember to work quietly, check out all materials before removing them from the library, leave the library neat by pushing chairs in, return materials to the desk, and not mark on or deface the furniture.
