Elementary Schools Win Maude Heyes-Fischer Award

Friends of the Bellingham Public Library are recognizing 12 elementary school students in the district for their efforts in learning to read. The Maude Heyes-Fischer Award acknowledges hard-working students in the federally funded Title I reading program. Teachers Donna Ringwald and Lisa D'Hondt chose students who have shown exceptional effort in learning to read. To encourage students to use their public library, each awardee is required to have a library card and be in good standing with the library.

The nominees of the 2008 Maude Heyes-Fischer Award are Adrian Franco, Fidel Rojo and Carina Santos Morales from Alderwood Elementary School, Brenna James, Tauvie Kim and Darren Rodenberger from Birchwood Elementary School, Sebastian Cochran, Angel Guerrero and Anthony Natola-Fristed from Sunnyland Elementary School, and Kenya Carranza, Beau Hubsch and Sunnia (Cricket) Sternhagen from Roosevelt Elementary School.

A ceremony from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Bellingham Library downtown will honor these students. Bellingham's Mayor Dan Pike will attend.

Elementary Schools Receive ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Grants

Birchwood, Geneva, Larrabee, Parkview and Roosevelt elementary schools have received a $500 grant each from Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance Program to support their schools' science programs. Matt and Caroline Yorkston of Yorkston Oil Co. Inc. worked with school leaders to secure the grants that are among the 4,000 available to schools across the country served by Exxon or Mobil stations. The grants were made possible by funding from the Exxon Mobil Corporation.

"Our elementary schools work hard to make learning interesting and fun," said Matt Yorkston. "As an Exxon retailer, I am proud to help the young people of Bellingham."

The ExxonMobil Education Alliance program is designed to provide Exxon and Mobil retailers with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through educational grants to neighborhood schools. ExxonMobil believes that, as members of the community, local retailers are best qualified to work with local educators to help identify schools and programs most in need of support.
