Students of the Bellingham School District are encouraged to apply early for summer school. Please complete and return an application to 1306 Dupont Street by Friday, June 13 to guarantee class placement.
For summer school course offerings and schedule information, transportation routes, to download an application and more, visit http://www.bham.wednet.edu/district/summerschool.htm If you have additional questions, please call (360) 647-6817. Summer school operates Monday through Thursday from July 7 to Aug. 7.
Summer school will offer literacy and math programs for elementary school students, basic skills transitions for students transitioning from grades fifth to sixth and eighth to ninth, a middle-level college ready academy, as well as a credit ahead and credit retrieval courses for high school students.
Middle Level College Ready Academies will support students entering seventh and eighth grades with strengthening their math and literacy skills while exploring college and career interests. The classes are open to all students. Field trips to local colleges and community connections may be included.
A no-charge support course will be offered to current 10th graders who did not meet standards on reading, writing or math sections on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). This class is to prepare students for the WASL retake in August. Students will be notified for eligibility in June. Meeting the WASL standards are a graduation requirement for current 12th graders and beyond.
An elective culminating project course will be offered for high school students entering grade 12. The course supports students who want classroom assistance to get an early start on this graduation requirement.
High school students will also have opportunities to earn credit for health, technology connections, physical education or Washington state history.
Summer school enrollment priority is given to students performing below district or state standards or report card grades. Families are encouraged to call classroom teachers to see if their child could benefit from the academic support program.
Current fifth and eighth graders need to demonstrate they meet the state standards in reading, writing and math, according to the district's Progress and Promotion policy. Summer school is highly recommended for fifth and eighth graders who are not yet meeting grade level standards by June. Summer school will be provided at no charge for these students entering grades six and nine who have been recommended for this support. Students whose families choose to waive this opportunity will receive additional support and may have an alternate education plan at the next grade level.
