Squalicum Student Wins Toyota Community Scholarship

Squalicum High School senior Josephine Garcia is a regional winner of the  Toyota Community Scholarship. Out of more than 8,000 nominated applicants, she was one of 100 who selected to receive a $10,000 college scholarship and is in the running for one of 12 national scholarships valued at $20,000. This scholarship is for students who exemplify outstanding academic excellence, leadership and commitment to community service. Garcia used her culminating project as a springboard to form a local group called "Operation Smile Student Team."  Under Garcia's guidance, this team raised enough money to provide surgeries for 15 children from developing countries to correct cleft palate.

State Math Competition Winners Include Sehome, Shuksan,
Carl Cozier, Geneva and Lowell Students

Sehome High School junior Jake Jaffe placed first in the Division II Team Problem Category of the Washington State Mathematics Council  (WSMC) competition held April 21 in Yakima.  Jaffe also took seventh in the state ranking of topical individuals by class.

Fifth grade students at Carl Cozier, Geneva and Lowell Elementary and sixth and eighth grade students at Shuksan Middle School competed in the WSMC Math Olympiad on May 5 at Sehome High School.  A total of 22 schools attended with 85 teams competing.  The competition was comprised of two sessions.  Session one was a long problem that included some geometry, measurement or algebra, or a combination of all three. It required demonstrating work and explaining thinking. Session two consisted of five tests, each with five problems. They were grouped into the five math content strands of number, geometry, measurement, probability and statistics, and algebra. The scores for the five were added together to get the score for session two. Ribbons were awarded when a school scored in the "excellent" range. The medals were awarded when a school scored in the "superior" range.

In session one, Geneva teams one and three, and  Lowell teams one, four and five received ribbons. Lowell teams two and three both received medals.  Shuksan's grade six team two received a medal.  In session two, Lowell team one also took a ribbon.

The WSMC is a professional organization that promotes and influences mathematics education.

Sehome Students Take Honors on National Spanish Exam

In April, 145 Sehome students  participated in the National Spanish Exam based on national standards set by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese.  There are five levels of the test, based on each year of study.  Each level has three categories: regular (for students whose primary exposure is in the classroom); outside experience (for students who have significant experience outside of the classroom); and bilingual (for students who categorize their experience with the language as equal or nearly equal to their first language).  Many students placed in the top 10 for Washington state and many placed in the top percentile in the nation. Percentile score does not refer to the percentage of questions answered correctly but indicates the test-takers' standing relative to the norm group standard.
