Coast Guard Academy
U.S. Coast Guard
News Release
The cadet journalists hail from different regions both inside and beyond the continental United States. While they represent different academic fields, these cadet bloggers are similar in their desire to honestly convey the Academy experience through regular online entries.
Cadet participation in the journalist program is voluntary, however each of the 39 cadets was recommended by faculty and staff for his or her writing aptitude and ability to balance this new commitment with their rigorous schedules. This program isn’t just about the mastery of academics and personal focus though. The candidates were chosen based on their appreciation of the opportunities they have been afforded by having chosen to attend the Academy. The decision to serve your country as a Coast Guard officer is not easy, so the goal of this group of young men and women is to assist prospective cadets and their families by depicting the reality of cadet life. First Class Cadet Caitlin Cunningham, writing for the program since 2006, said, "The cadet journal program has helped me stay focused on the ultimate goal of why I am at the Academy. Every time I receive an email from a prospective cadet, I am reminded of why I chose to come here. I enjoy helping others accomplish their goals and dreams."
