Man medically evacuated from cruise ship near Florence, Ore.

ASTORIA, Ore. — A 46-year-old man was medically evacuated from a cruise ship 40 miles west of Florence, Ore., by the Coast Guard Friday.

Coast Guard Group/Air Station North Bend responded when the crew of the Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Seas reported a passenger had been injured while playing basketball aboard the vessel.  An HH-65 helicopter crew flew to the vessel to retrieve the man who was suffering from head injuries.  The man was taken to Sacred Heart hospital in Eugene, Ore., for treatment.

The missions of Group/Air Station North Bend include maritime search and rescue, enforcement of laws and treaties, providing aids to navigation, and marine environmental protection. In addition, the air station frequently assists federal, state and county agencies by responding to calls for assistance with inland searches and medical evacuations of injured loggers.
