Chief Machinery Technician David Kautz retired this summer from the Coast Guard after serving 26 years of active duty. A ceremony was held aboard Coast Guard Cutter Alert in Astoria, Ore., on August 4, 2008.
Kautz lives in Warrenton, Ore., with his wife Laurie and their two boys Will and Hunter. The Alert has been lucky enough to have Kautz aboard for three years.
"It's always sad to see a shipmate retire and we all wish Chief Kautz fair winds, following seas, happiness and joy as he and his family begin a new chapter in their lives," said Cdr. Matthew Creelman, Commanding Officer of the Alert.
Kautz enjoys the area and plans on staying locally where he can enjoy his hobbies of fishing and riding ATVs. Kautz's past assignments have included Group Astoria, Ore., and the Cutter Polar Star, homeported in Seattle.
August 4 is a meaningful day for Kautz's retirement because it shows his love of the Coast Guard. Coast Guardsmen annually celebrate the day because on August 4, 1790 the Revenue Cutter Service (predecessor of the Coast Guard) was created by the U.S. Congress.
Good luck to you Chief! You deserve a little rest and relaxation!
