COAST GUARD RESCUES 54 PEOPLE TRAPPED BY FLOOD WATERS | |
| SEATTLE - The Coast Guard has rescued or assisted in the evacuation of 54 people who became stranded by recent flooding in Washington and Oregon this week.
Small boat crews, helicopter crews and shore personnel from several Coast Guard units in Washington and Oregon began rescuing people trapped by flood waters Monday afternoon. The Coast Guard assisted state and local emergency response agencies to help the stranded people. The most recent case involved the rescue of four people trapped in a van near Orting, Wash. today at 11 a.m. The four people were hoisted to safety by an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Port Angeles, Wash. In Tillamook, Ore., crews from Station Tillamook Bay evacuated 31 people, four dogs and eight rabbits from rising flood waters in downtown Tillamook Monday and Tuesday. An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria rescued seven adults, seven children and two dogs from areas in Tillamook that were unreachable by boat or vehicle early Tuesday. Near La Push, Wash., Monday an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Port Angeles rescued an elderly couple, their two dogs and their two cats after flood waters from the Bogachiel River inundated their home. The couple and their pets were taken to Coast Guard Station Quillayute River, Wash. An HH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew from Port Angeles rescued three people from their home in Monroe, Wash., after the Snohomish River flooded their house late Monday night.
