Students compete at BPA's Regional Science Bowl

BPA’s Science Bowl tests students' knowledge in a fast paced question-and-answer format similar to the television quiz show, Jeopardy. Competing teams from urban and rural schools consist of four students, one alternate and a teacher advisor/coach. Elimination rounds narrow the competition to a final set of teams angling for first, second and third place.

The competition celebrates academic achievement and encourages careers in math, science and technology. Fourteen colleges and universities are showing their support by offering scholarships to the members of the top three teams.  The winning teams also will earn the right to compete at the national championships in Washington, D.C., later this spring.

This year's regional Science Bowl co-sponsors include AREVA Transmission and Distribution, Schweitzer Engineering, University of Portland, Portland Energy Conservation Inc., Microsoft and Quiznos.

BPA is a not-for-profit federal electric utility that operates a high-voltage transmission grid comprising more than 15,000 miles of lines and associated substations in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. It also markets more than a third of the electricity consumed in the Pacific Northwest. The power is produced at 31 federal dams operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation and one nuclear plant in the Northwest and is sold to more than 140 Northwest utilities. BPA purchases power from seven wind projects and has more than 2,500 megawatts of wind interconnected to its transmission system.
