BELLINGHAM - The instructor of "Criminal Law and Justice," a hands-on course for teens offered by Western Washington University's Extended Education and Summer Programs, is searching for volunteer jurors for two mock trials that the students will conduct July 17.
After a week of learning about the criminal justice system with attorney Julie Helling, an associate professor at Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, the teens will take the roles of attorneys, defendants and court staff in the mock trials. One mock trial will be about an environmentalist facing criminal charges of property damage. Another will be about battered child syndrome.
The course is part of College Quest, which gives high school students a glimpse of college life with a one-credit course and a week's stay in campus residence halls.
Both mock trials will be at the Whatcom County Courthouse July 17. The mock trial about the environmentalist will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and the mock trial about battered child syndrome will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
People interested in serving on either mock trial jury may call Helling at (360) 650-4907 or e-mail her at Julie.Helling@wwu.edu.
