BELLINGHAM - Students entering middle school and high school can participate in a variety of Summer Programs for Youth offered through Western Washington University; teens can explore a new academic interest, delve into a topic in the creative arts, or embark on a skill-building water adventure.

WWU Summer Programs for Youth (SPY) is open to middle school students the weeks of July 6-10 or July 13-17, and high school students the week of July 20-24 with an optional dorm stay.

The academic-based SPY programs offer an opportunity to experience learning on a college campus with classes that include field trips, lab work, projects, and other activities to make learning fun.

Middle school students can investigate the following topics, Critter and Creature Science, Guitar-Beginning or Intermediate, Adventures in Chemistry and Physics, or River Quest (Environmental Studies). High school students can choose from Veterinary Science, Computer Science 101, Filmmaking in Action, or World of Digital Photography.

WWU Lakewood Jr. Sailing Camp is the oldest (since 1981) and most comprehensive sailing program in Whatcom County. Young sailors and windsurfers master skills in a natural environment that few activities can match.  The emphasis is on fun with the goal of becoming self-reliant and efficient.

The program is at WWU's Lakewood Water Sports Facility, which is one of the premier facilities in the Northwest and located on the south shore of Lake Whatcom. Sailors can progress through three levels of sailing: Beginning Sailing, Intermediate Sailing, Beginning Racing, and or they can enroll in Beginning Windsurfing.

The half-day programs are available weekly during the summer starting in June, but enrollment is limited and early registration is encouraged.

College Quest is an option for ambitious high school students who want a complete pre-college experience, including dorm stay, dining hall privileges, and earning a college credit during the week. College Quest runs July 13-17 or July 13-19, with a choice of topics, Criminal Law and Justice, Computer Science: Animation Programming, or Climate Quest: Environmental Studies and the Art of Filmmaking.

WWU's Youth Programs are designed, developed and led by WWU faculty and staff. Visit the Web for details on all of WWU's Youth Programs, including options for youth entering grades K- 12, at www.wwu.edu/youth. If you have questions, please e-mail eesp@wwu.edu or call (360) 650-3308.
