WWU Brings MBA Program to Everett's University Center; Classes Begin Next Winter

BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's College of Business and Economics will begin a Weekend MBA program at University Center of North Puget Sound in Everett next January.

Washington state's Higher Educating Coordinating Board on June 3 approved the request to start the program, which will hold classes on alternating Fridays and Saturdays and take 24 months to complete.

"We believe it is important to give place-bound Snohomish County residents another choice for quality business education. Our program will give them the grounding they need to advance their careers and help the county continue to develop economically," said Brian Burton, dean of WWU's College of Business and Economics.

Christine Kerlin, vice president for University Center, agreed.

"Western's MBA program is well suited to the diverse population in the Everett area. We have received significant response to the opportunity of a weekend MBA from those who are at the point in their lives where they want to advance or switch careers, and need a local program that fits into their schedule," she said.

Potential applicants to the program should begin the testing and application process this summer.

"Despite the fact that next January seems like a long way off, applicants will need to take the GMAT this summer and then complete the application process soon after, so there isn't as much time as it may seem," said Matthew Liao-Troth, chair of WWU's Department of Management and the director of the University's MBA programs.

Liao-Troth said WWU hopes to fill a first cohort of 20 students this year, and expand the program to 40 students per cohort thereafter.

"We have had very successful MBA programs in Bellingham for the last 30 years, and are very excited to begin serving Snohomish County with a local, AACSB-accredited MBA option. Our faculty are looking forward to working with the leaders of business, government, and the nonprofit sector in Snohomish County through this program. The Weekend MBA format will allow the 'go-getters' in industry to get ahead in their careers, and we want to be a part of that personal transformation," he said.

The Weekend MBA program joins a list of existing WWU programs at University Center, including bachelor's degrees in Environmental Science and Planning and Environmental Policy through WWU's Huxley College of the Environment; programs from WWU's Woodring College of Education at Everett include bachelor's degrees in Elementary Education and Human Services and a master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, as well as a Master in Teaching program which launches this summer.
