Lar Lubovitch Dance Company's visit to WWU will feature three of Lubovitch's highly acclaimed works: "Jangle - Four Hungarian Dances" (2008), "Men's Stories - A Concerto in Ruins" (2000), and "Dvorák Serenade" (2007).
"Jangle," set to Rhapsodies No. 1 and No. 2 for piano and violin by Bela Bartok, features four male and three female dancers. Originally commissioned by the Joyce Theatre for their 25th anniversary, the performers are described by The New York Times as moving "with czardas-influenced stamps and dashing jumps through varying solo and group configurations, evoking the good humor of casual street dances."
Lubovitch's "Men's Stories" explores masculinity, biography, and character through an unusual collage format rather than a linear narrative. The 55-minute work features nine male dancers, each of whom has their own individual persona, that interact to tell tales of affection, empathy and conflict among men.
Choreographed in 2007, "Dvorák Serenade" is a lush, romantic piece that features costumes by Wendy Winters. During the 25-minute work, the twelve dancers juxtapose and blend with each other as they form two leads, a quartet, and a corps of six dancers while creating sweeping patterns on-stage.
Tickets for the evening concert range from $14 to $30 and can be purchased at the WWU Box Office. A limited selection of tickets will be available at Village Books and the Community Food Co-op.
The Western Box Office is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and one hour prior to the performance. For individual tickets or disability accommodations, contact the WWU Box Office at (360) 650-6146 or visit http://www.tickets.wwu.edu.
