BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University is hosting Sleeping Over with Science and Arts (SOSA) Oct. 24-25 for students in grades 3-5 who are interested in science or art.
Students can enroll in one of two workshops on Friday evening, as well as an optional Saturday morning of physical activity at Wade King Student Recreation Center. The evening will include the science or art workshop, snacks and a movie
The science workshop, "Creatures of the Hidden World," allows students to investigate the mysterious and surprising organisms of everyday habitats, and identify the life forms that live within pinecones, grass, compost and leaf patches.
The art workshop, "Mystical, Magical, World of Art," allows students to create their own modern-day, 3-D contemporary piece of art. Students will also visit the mystical world of M.C. Escher, a world famous graphic artist, to gain perspective of how things around us "fit" together.
For an extended experience, students can spend Saturday morning from 8 to 10:30 a.m. playing games, swimming and rock climbing for an additional $17 per person.
The $55 per person registration fee covers instruction, overnight supervision, materials, snacks and continental breakfast. Participants need to bring sleeping bag, pillow, toothbrush, toothpaste and jacket. Campers sleep in their clothes, so comfortable clothing is suggested. Students are separated by gender during the sleep over and are supervised by WWU Education students.
Check-in for SOSA begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 at the Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (SMATE) building. Students check out at 8 a.m. at SMATE, unless they are attending the recreation activity.
