BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Fall 2007 issue of The Planet magazine won third place in the design category in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Student Magazine Contest, according to The Planet advisor Bill Dietrich.
"Western students recognize the importance of print design in our visual culture, so getting national recognition for their hard work is very encouraging," Dietrich said.
The national university contest attracted 316 entries from 29 universities that were judged by magazine-industry professionals. In the design category, first place went to the University of Texas; second place to Drake University; third place to Western Washington University; and honorable mention went to the University of Missouri. The Planet also won honorable mention last year in the general excellence category.
The judges' comments on the magazine ranged from: "the layouts are well thought-out and deliver on the concepts," to "well-balanced use of black-and-white and color photography" and "the type design reflecting the photo composition shows a good eye."
The winning issue was designed by students Yuri Tolpin and Caitlin Weber. The photo editor was Todd Linder and editor in chief was Page Buono. Emily Linroth, who wrote the story featured on the front cover of the winning issue, will become The Planet's editor in chief for the 2008-2009 academic year.
The Planet is the quarterly magazine of Western's Huxley College of the Environment.
