BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University College of Fine and Performing Arts graduates Malia Killings and Yuri Tolpin created design projects that will appear in the October issue of Creative Quarterly Journal. Yuri Tolpin and Malia Killings

Creative Quarterly Journal allows students, instructors and other artists to submit their designs for publication consideration as part of the Creative Quarterly Competition. The journal, which now includes professional work, started as Creative Convocation, featuring art from universities and colleges around the country.

Killings' design project is a retail packaging for cedar sachets and Tolpin's is an environmental graphic design solution for Danish Modern. Their projects were selected from the National Student Design Competition, which was judged by a panel of professional designers. Their designs will be included with design projects from 16 other university students belonging to 11 different departments.

Western is one of four institutions from the western region selected to receive student publication in the journal. The other schools include the Alberta College of Art and Design, Capilano College and California State University at Long Beach.

The winning projects were completed during the 2008 Three-Dimensional Graphic Design course taught by WWU Art Department Design Program instructor Cristina de Almeida.

Killings and Tolpin graduated in June with bachelor's degrees from the Design Program concentrated in Graphic Design. Killings was honored at commencement June 14 as the Art Department's Outstanding Graduate. Western departments name one student an Outstanding Graduate each academic year.
