WWU Summerstock Presents Commedia in the Park Aug. 7-17

BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Theatre Arts Department will present "Commedia in the Park" Aug. 7-17 at various parks throughout Whatcom County as part of the 38th season of the recently renamed Summerstock.

Created by the Dell' Arte ensemble and directed by Rich Brown, "Commedia in the Park" is loosely based on Moliere's "The Bourgeois Gentlemen."  The performance showcases traditional commedia stock characters, such as Harlequin, Columbina and the Doctor in a contemporary story featuring live music, theatrical costumes, full masks and very physical acting.  Prior to each show, there will be juggling, acrobatics and singing performed.

"Commedia in the Park" is a traveling show and will be staged at the following locations:

  • 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at the Red Barn Lavender Farm;
  • 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at Fairhaven Park;
  • 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Elizabeth Park;
  • 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Lake Padden Park;
  • 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Maritime Heritage Park;
  • 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at Cornwall Park;
  • 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, on the Fairhaven Green;
  • 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Whatcom Falls Park;
  • 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Fairhaven Park.

Tickets are $10 for general admission; $8 for faculty, staff, and seniors; and $6 for students.
