BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Theatre Arts Department will present "Snoopy!!! The Musical," "Commedia in the Park" and performances by participants in the Summerstock Youth Theatre Institute (SYTI) as the 38th season of the recently renamed Summerstock.
The productions, all of which are family friendly and open to the public, will be staged in the Old Main Theatre and at various parks throughout Whatcom County during the months of July and August.
Tickets for "Snoopy!!! The Musical" and "Commedia in the Park" range in price from $6 to $12 and are currently available through the WWU Box Office at (360) 650-6146 or online at www.tickets.wwu.edu. All SYTI performances are free of charge.
Western's SYTI, currently in its third year, provides an opportunity for theatrical growth and development through the exploration of dramatic workshops and productions. Sessions are available for both elementary and secondary students and will culminate in an original performance with full technical support in the Old Main Theatre during July.
A sequel to "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," "Snoopy!!! The Musical" is based on the world renowned "Peanuts" comic strip by Charles M. Schulz. Filled with delightful numbers such as "The Big Bow-Wow," "Don't Be Anything Less (Than Everything You Can Be)," "Where Did That Little Dog Go" and "Daisy Hill," the show prompts laughter and provides entertainment for all ages. Performances of "Snoopy!!! The Musical" will open Thursday, July 31 and run through Sunday, Aug. 10 in the Old Main Theatre.
Created by the Del Arte ensemble, "Commedia in the Park" is loosely based on Moliere's "The Bourgeois Gentlemen." The performance showcases traditional commedia stock characters, such as Harlequin, Columbina and the Doctor, in a contemporary story and features live music, theatrical costumes, full masks and highly physical acting. Prior to each show, there will be juggling, acrobatics and singing performed. "Commedia in the Park" will play Aug. 7-17 at various parks throughout Whatcom County.
