BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University graduate student Audrey Colnar and WWU Institute of Environmental Toxicology director Wayne Landis recently received the Human and Ecological Risk Assessment (HERA) Paper of the Year 2007 award for their local research on the invasive European green crab.
The paper titled "Conceptual Model Development for Invasive Species and a Regional Risk Assessment Case Study: The European Green Crab, Carcinus maenas, at Cherry Point, Washington, USA" was described by HERA's senior editor as "an important advance in ecological risk assessment at the regional scale dealing with invasive species, arguably a more important global stressor then chemical contamination."
The Institute of Environmental Toxicology was established in 1989 as part of WWU's Huxley College of the Environment and focuses on aquatic and terrestrial toxicology, conducting regional risk assessments and studies on how landscapes affect the distribution and abundance of organisms.
WWU's Huxley College of the Environment is one of the oldest environmental colleges in the nation and a recognized national leader in producing the next generation of environmental stewards. The College's academic programs reflect a broad view of the physical, biological, social and cultural world. This innovative and interdisciplinary approach makes Huxley unique.
