BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University faculty and staff members are among the many participants of EverybodyBIKE's "Team-Up," a month-long competition that encourages teams to keep track of their bike and walking trips during May for a chance to win prizes.

WWU's Academic Technology and User Services, WWU Foundation, Administrative Computing and Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studieas are just a few of the departments taking part and forming teams of five or six riders.

"It's pretty exciting to see so much WWU participation in this event," said Carol Berry, WWU Sustainable Transportation Program manager, of the nearly 30 faculty and staff members signed up so far.

EverybodyBIKE's "Team-Up" is open to all ages. Anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Whatcom County can form a team and participate. Teams can get more information and sign up through Whatcom County's EverybodyBIKE Web site at http://www.everybodybike.com/ and go to the tab "Team-Up."

"Any bike or walking trip that replaces a car trip counts toward your team point score. Biking to the store, walking to school or visiting friends all count," said Ellen Barton, EverybodyBIKE Program Coordinator.

Each team member must make a minimum of three bike or walking trips during May to be part of the team and be eligible for prizes. Rollerskating, skateboarding, riding a tricycle, using a wheelchair, a foot-powered scooter or other forms of human-powered transportation can all count towards your team's mileage for the month.

Everyone who participates in "Team-Up" is eligible for dozens of cash prizes awarded by a random drawing. Members of the top-scoring teams will be eligible for special recognition based on the following categories:

  • Most team members who are new to bicycling and walking for transportation
  • Highest number of days participated in "Team-Up" for EverybodyBIKE
  • Best encouragement or support provided by company for "Team-Up" for EverybodyBIKE participation
  • Most creative encouragement provided by group or company for "Team-Up" for EverybodyBIKE participation.

Prizes range from cash awards of $50 to $100, bike accessories, restaurant gift certificates and more. All trips must be recorded by June 3, and winners will be selected on June 16.
