Local governments seek comments on Lake Whatcom plan

Posted: April 27, 2010 8:52:13 AM PDT

With a focus on phosphorus reduction, the Lake Whatcom Management Program’s  2010-2014 draft Work Plan was presented to the City and County Councils and the Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer District at a meeting of the Joint Councils and Commissioners on April 20.  The Councils and Commission then moved to open a 30-day public comment period on the draft plan.

A public question and answer session with city and county staff and opportunity to submit comments will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 3, 2010 at Bellingham City Hall in City Council Chambers.

The draft work plan, similar to preceding work plans, guides decisions and actions by the City of Bellingham, Whatcom County and the Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer District with a joint goal of reducing excess phosphorus loading in Lake Whatcom, the source of drinking water for nearly 98,000 people.  The work plan is organized around twelve program areas with tasks and actions for each.  A new format was adopted this year to present more detailed, clear information and improve accountability.

Comments may be submitted by email to cfogelsong@cob.org with “work plan comments” in the subject line or by mailing comments to the Bellingham City Council, Whatcom County Council or the Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer District Commissioners.  Please include reference to the task number for all comments that are task specific. The comment period ends at the close of business on May 21, 2010.

At the end of the 30-day comment period, all comments will be complied into a staff report by the Lake Whatcom Management Program Interjurisdictional Coordinating Team (ICT) and presented to the City and County Councilors and Lake Whatcom Water and Sewer District Commissioners for their consideration.

If sending comments by mail please send correspondence to your Council/Commission office:
