Highland Heights Park renovation includes new playground

Posted: February 24, 2010 9:53:28 AM PST

Renovation of the children’s playground and other improvements at Highland Heights Park will begin during the first week of March 2010.  Highland Heights Park is located on Vining Street between Illinois Lane and Maryland Place in the Alabama Hill Neighborhood.

The new playground equipment includes a swing, slides, various climbers, a spring toy and a spinning toy. Other park improvements include restriping the existing basketball court, adding marble, hop-scotch, and four-square play court striping, new surfacing, a wheelchair-accessible path between Illinois Lane and the new playground, picnic table, park benches and site grading.

The existing worn playground equipment is being removed because it does not comply with current playground safety and universal accessibility standards.  In February 2010, the City of Bellingham entered into an agreement with Faber Brothers Construction Company of Lynden, WA, in the amount of $70,728.16, to remove and replace existing playground equipment and to construct other improvements in the park. This project is funded with Real Estate Excise Tax dollars.

The Parks and Recreation Department requests that neighbors stay out of construction areas until the project is complete.
