The City of Bellingham and the Big Rock Garden Park Committee are pleased to announce the generous donation by established Japanese artist Kenji Gomi of his work Form of Chain. This 6.5-foot tall resin and stainless steel sculpture was first showcased in the juried 2009 Big Rock Garden Sculpture Exhibition and will now become the 36th permanently installed artwork exhibited year-round in Big Rock Garden Park.
Kenji Gomi of Tokyo is an acclaimed sculptor best known for his monumental civic sculptures installed throughout Japan and Korea. Since the early 1980’s, Gomi has been a pioneer in bringing art to public spaces as a founding member of the Environmental Art Studio. He has won several prestigious competitions for public art installations throughout Japan including his 64-foot tall stainless steel sculpture, Fukui 21, and the 9-foot tall official flame holder for the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima. Gomi’s works are held in museum, civic and private collections in Japan, Korea, China, and with the Big Rock Garden Park installation, now the United States. Form of Chain highlights Gomi’s continued interest in the shapes found in nature and how, in these, the rules of geometry are reflected. Both simple and sublime, Form of Chain explores the concept of infinity through the repetitive use of a singular form.
Big Rock Garden Park is located just off of Sylvan Road near Lake Whatcom in Bellingham, Washington. The Park showcases artworks from around the world in a beautiful setting featuring ornamental plantings under a natural forest canopy. The Park is open to the public 7 days a week, dawn to dusk, and is free of charge.
