A man was discovered deceased today at about 2:45 p.m on a hiking trail in the Sehome Arboretum.
The victim of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound, he was found by hikers about 60 yards off the road. University Police, Bellingham Police and Bellingham Fire Department Medics responded. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene by Medics.
Although the official cause of death will be made by the Whatcom County Medical Examiner, this investigation is being treated as a suicide.
The man has been identified as 19 year old Matthew L. Stanley. Stanley was a Freshman at Western Washington University.
