In July, the Bellingham Police Department announced the formation of a new neighborhood crime -fighting tool. The Anti-Crime Team (ACT), which consists of 4 officers and a Sergeant, went to work investigating on-going neighborhood crimes.
Since its creation, ACT has successfully investigated a variety of crimes resulting in numerous arrests. For example, in September, ACT arrested two individuals for possession of heroin, as a result of those arrests, the team was able to link them to 11 local burglaries. Also in September, 3 juveniles were arrested by ACT for possession of stolen property, theft and trafficking in stolen property. One of the items recovered was a bike valued at over $3,000.
In August, ACT investigated a theft ring in a local neighborhood that resulted in the seizure of 10 firearms including several assault rifles, ammunition, ½ pound of heroin, ecstasy and nearly $12,000 in cash. Stolen property was also recovered at the residence. One individual was charged as a result of that investigation.
These are but a few of the successful investigations which have resulted in 29 felony and 36 misdemeanor arrests.
Police Chief Todd Ramsay said “By working with other units within the Police Department and partnering with neighborhood leaders, ACT is making our neighborhoods a safer place to live”.
ACT continues to evolve but has already proven to be an effective neighborhood crime fighting tool.
