On July 26th a new law banning the sale of novelty lighters was signed by Governor Gregoire. The law will reduce the risk of fire from children playing with these toy-like lighters. There was a clause in the law to allow retailers/wholesalers 90 days to sell their remaining inventory. The 90-day period expired on Sunday October 25th.
Novelty lighters often have a shape that resembles or imitates an object other than a lighter and the shapes are appealing to children. These lighters may also have audio and visual effects which could include music, buzzers, flashing lights or color-changing lights. Novelty lighters do not include disposable lighters that are printed or decorated with logos, decals, artwork, or heat shrinkable sleeves.
The Bellingham Fire Department is asking for your assistance to keep these lighters out of the hands of our children. If you see a business selling a lighter that meets the description, please contact the Bellingham Fire Department at 360-778-8420.
