Sporadic City communications outages continue into evening

Posted: October 22, 2009 17:57:43 PST

City of Bellingham network and telephone services continue to experience sporadic outages tonight, after an hour-long disruption of services earlier today caused by a power failure at the data center housing City network servers. These disruptions do not affect people's ability to reach 9-1-1 emergency services and Police Department telephone numbers.

City services affected include the Arne Hanna Aquatic Center, where telephones and other network systems may not be operating though the facility is expected to remain open tonight until its regular closing time of 9:15 p.m.

It is unknown at this time if City services will continue to be affected overnight or on Friday.

Today's service outages are the result of power disruptions at the FiberCloud Data Center, where many City electronic communications services are housed.  The H1N1 flu vaccine registration call center, which is located at City of Bellingham facilities, could not operate during the outage and was officially closed for the evening at 5 p.m.  Other local government and business communications also are affected by the power outage.

City officials will continue to provide updates as long as services are affected.
