City to host meeting on wastewater treatment plant expansion

Posted: October 19, 2009 11:44:04 PST

The City of Bellingham will begin a series of neighborhood meetings this week to gather community input on the planned expansion of the Post Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. The first meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22 at Fairhaven Middle School Commons, 110 Parkridge Road.

The City is in the early stages of planning necessary expansion of the Post Point Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), and will hold four informal public meetings during the planning process to obtain community input. The City has initiated this project because the wastewater treatment plant is projected to reach capacity by 2013.

“We want to continue to meet Department of Ecology requirements and provide waste water treatment exceeding all health and safety standards for our community," said City Engineer Rory Routhe.

Routhe said the City's adopted Comprehensive Sewer Plan identifies the need for additional wastewater treatment capacity at the Post Point plant.  Planning for plant expansion is just beginning, he said, with a final facility plan expected to be completed in July 2010.

At the initial meeting consultants will discuss the history of the project, explain why the expansion is needed, and present the project schedule. Opportunities for the public to provide ideas and input will be outlined.

A second meeting is planned two weeks later at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, also at Fairhaven Middle School, to summarize community input and present specific project requirements affecting the site. Two additional meetings are planned for the first half of 2010 to present updated plans based on the ideas gathered at the 2009 meetings.
