City begins annual crack sealing on local streets

Posted: June 29, 2009 14:23:21 PST

Beginning Monday, June 29 Roger Langelier Construction, under contract with the City of Bellingham, will be crack sealing in the South, Samish, Happy Valley, Puget, York and Sunnyland neighborhoods. Cracks will be sealed along portions of the following roads:

Old Samish Road
Wilkin Street
24th Street
26th Street
Taylor Avenue
Canby Court
Nevada Street
Potter Street
York Street
James Street
Meador Avenue
Civic Field Way
Lakeway east of Clearbrook Drive

This project involves equipment and a work crew that is continuously moving from location to location. Motorists traveling through the work zones should expect delays and use caution. Flaggers on site will direct drivers around intermittent lane closures.  Affected areas will be announced weekly to allow residents to make travel adjustments.

Crack sealing is an inexpensive preventative maintenance treatment that can significantly delay roadway deterioration. Crews apply sealing material directly into cracks before cracks become too large or before the road is subject to freeze-thaw cycles. Flexible, rubberized asphalt sealants bond to crack walls and move with the pavement, preventing water from entering the road base. The life of the road is extended and maintenance costs are greatly reduced.

Crack sealing is anticipated to continue in various locations throughout the City for the next 4-6 weeks, but may be extended depending on weather. For more information about this program please contact Chad Bedlington, Maintenance Superintendent, at cbedlington@cob.org or (360) 778-7700.
