The City of Bellingham will add a 24th neighborhood this Friday, March 6th, when the E. Bakerview/James Street Annexation becomes official. The 635-acre area, home to nearly 800 residents, will be known as the King Mountain Neighborhood. The acquisition substantially modifies the city's northern boundary.
The first neighborhood meeting for King Mountain is scheduled for 9-11 a.m. Saturday, March 21 at the King Mountain Church. The purpose of the meeting is for city officials and others to initiate creating a neighborhood association. Bellingham Mayor Dan Pike will attend the meeting, along with other city staff representatives.
"King Mountain is Bellingham's first newly created neighborhood since the Guide Meridian* Neighborhood was formed in 1997," Pike said. "We look forward to welcoming the residents of King Mountain to the City of Bellingham, and introducing them to City programs, services and people."
King Mountain Neighborhood is adjacent to Bellingham city limits in the Northern Urban Growth Area and shares a common boundary with the Mount Baker Neighborhood on the east and south and with the Meridian and Guide Meridian/Cordata Neighborhoods on the west. Bellingham's Urban Growth Area boundary forms the northern annexation boundary. This new neighborhood is bisected north and south by East Bakerview Road, and east and west by James Street.
The City of Bellingham owns 6.4 acres on King Mountain for a possible future park. The intersection of James Street and E. Bakerview is the proposed location for a future urban village that will likely be master planned next year.
City staff will be conducting a door-to-door census, as required by state law, during March 6-20, to determine the number of residents per address within the newly annexed area. The confidential information collected during these interviews will be critical to the City's ability to obtain tax revenue for providing services and amenities to the new city residents. In addition to conducting the census, staff will distribute information packets containing brochures about a variety of city services.
