Volunteers needed for Dec. 6 planting party

Posted: November 21, 2008 14:51:00 PST

Help support salmon and other wildlife at a volunteer planting party at Red Tail Reach on Saturday, December 6, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.  Join the Bellingham Parks Volunteer Program, the Washington Conservation Corps and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association in planting native vegetation to create important wildlife habitat and learn about the Red Tail Reach Salmon Habitat Enhancement project.

The Red Tail Reach Salmon Habitat Enhancement project was implemented in summer 2008 by the City of Bellingham Environmental Resources Division.  The project improved 1,550 feet of Whatcom Creek by creating low flow refuge areas for salmon, reconnecting Whatcom Creek to its floodplain and creating holding pools for adult chinook and steelhead salmon.  Funding for the project comes from the Olympic Pipeline settlement.

Red Tail Reach is located along the Whatcom Creek Trail between Racine Street and I-5.  Volunteers should park at the corner of Frasier and Puget Streets in the Frank Geri Softball Fields parking lot and follow the signs to the Red Tail Reach work site.  Dress for the weather.  Gloves, tools and instruction will be provided.
