The Public Works Department wishes to inform the public that the following roads will have traffic limitations during the week September 15-19, 2008 to accommodate construction.
Northshore Drive
Interwest Construction, Inc., under a contract with the City of Bellingham, will continue work installing storm water facilities, sidewalks, and bike lanes, plus a new pavement overlay on Northshore Avenue between Alabama Street and Britton Road. Traffic will be diverted by flaggers or detoured around the work between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm. Drivers may experience significant delays and are encouraged to use Barkley Boulevard as an alternate route until further notice.
Motorists should be aware that Northshore Drive will be paved Monday through Wednesday during the week of September 22. There will be extended delays during this work so alternate routes should be used if at all possible. The completion date for this project has been extended to September 30. For more information about this project visit the city's website http://www.cob.org/documents/pw/curconst/ES-0367.pdf or contact Freeman Anthony at fanthony@cob.org or 778-7900.
Barkley Blvd
Tiger Construction, under contract with the City of Bellingham, is expanding and upgrading the storm water detention pond located off Barkley Blvd. just west of Northridge Way. Traffic may be disrupted as large trucks enter and exit the site. For more information about this project visit the city's website http://www.cob.org/documents/pw/curconst/northridge-detention-pond-retrofit.pdf or contact Freeman Anthony at fanthony@cob.org or 778-7900.
Bay/Holly/Prospect
Tiger Construction, under contract with the City of Bellingham, will be removing sidewalks, streetlights and excavating for new storm water pipes at the intersection of Bay Street, Holly Street and Prospect Street. Bay Street will be closed to vehicle traffic during most of the project, however, there will be pedestrian access to all businesses at all times. For more information regarding this project visit the city's website http://www.cob.org/documents/pw/curconst/bay-and-holly-improvements.pdf or contact Freeman Anthony at fanthony@cob.org or 778-7900.
Sunset Drive (SR542)
Ram Construction, under contract with the City of Bellingham, will begin construction on Sunset Drive from Woburn Street to McLeod Road on Monday, September 22. The project will add a two-way left-turn lane, travel lanes, bus pullouts, bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the street.
Prior to the beginning of construction Puget Sound Energy will be relocating utility poles. Other utility companies, such as Comcast and Qwest, will move their lines after Puget Sound Energy has completed its work.
Beginning September 22, between the hours of 7:00-8:30 am and 4:30-6:00 pm traffic may be disrupted as large trucks enter and exit the site. Between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:30 pm traffic may be limited to one-way flagged traffic.
This project is funded in partnership with WSDOT and the Transportation Improvement Board. For more information about this project visit the city's website www.cob.org/documents/pw/curconst/es-0236-sunset-improvements.pdf or contact Mark Handzlik at MHandzlik@cob.org or 778-7900.
The City of Bellingham Public Works Department provides this information as a public service. It is based on currently available information. Motorists are reminded that weather and road conditions can change rapidly and should plan accordingly. When traveling through a construction area, drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are asked to be patient, proceed with caution and obey flaggers at all times. Planned road closures and restrictions are necessary to allow for a variety of maintenance work including resurfacing, sidewalk construction, water and sewer main work, and utility cuts. Dates, times and work locations are subject to change due to inclement weather or last-minute changes in work schedules.
