Posted: June 13, 2014 1:14:45 PM PDT

On 06-13-14, an autopsy was performed by the Whatcom County Medical Examiner in regards to the incident on Sunset Drive earlier in the week. WC Medical Examiner Dr.Goldfogel wrote the following about his findings.

At autopsy the decedent is definitively identified as Oleg P. Panchenko, age 37.  He died on June 10 from blast force injuries sustained in accidental detonation of a pipe bomb at approximately 9 am, in close proximity to his right wrist and right thigh which were not of immediate life threatening force.  He was alive for several hours post blast, continuing to refuse assistance or allow police entry and expired in the residence at least four hours after the blast.  There is no identification or evidence of a gun or gunshot related injury.  Other non-detonated homemade explosive devices were recovered from the apartment.  Mr. Panchenko has a history of ongoing mental health issues.  The cause of death is certified as “blast force soft tissue injury sustained in detonated pipe bomb explosion”, and the manner of death is certified accidental.

While the autopsy has been performed, an investigation is still on-going and if future information is discovered, we will advise the media at that time.
