Posted: June 26, 2008 10:56:19 PST

Two women narrowly escaped a fast moving structure fire in the Columbia neighborhood on June 26. The fire reportedly began in a garage shared by a duplex at 2805 Elm Street. Initial calls into 9-1-1 at 9:05 a.m. reported that an explosion had occurred generating the response of eight units from the Bellingham Fire Department. Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control within approximately 20 minutes. At the height of the fire, large volumes of smoke were created and visible throughout the northwest part of the city.

Both occupants of the duplex were at home when the fire began and were able to escape from their units on their own power. The two occupants sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Both sides of the duplex and the vehicles inside the garage were substantially damaged by the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by members of Bellingham Fire and Police Departments.
