Patrol officer's diligence solves rash of property crimes in Birchwood Neighborhood

Posted: January 27, 2014 7:38:53 AM PST

Bellingham (Wa) On Saturday January 25, 2014 at about 1 p.m. Randall Wayne Miller Jr. (05-20-1988) was booked into Whatcom County Jail for his involvement in several property crimes in the Birchwood Neighborhood that occurred on or about 01/22/2014.  Miller resides at his parent’s home at 3227 Firwood Avenue, which is within walking distance of the victim addresses.

Miller is being held in jail on probable cause for four separate burglaries and 3 vehicle prowls that were reported on January 22nd that occurred in the 2800 block Cottonwood Avenue.

Rob Brandland, a 16 year veteran patrol officer, investigated the bulk of the above listed crimes.  One victim had located a cell phone in his garage and Brandland was able to link this item to Miller. When Brandland went to Miller’s residence to speak with him about the cell phone he observed a battery powered mobility chair that had been stolen in the early hours of the 22nd.   Randall Miller Jr.  initially attempted to hide in the attic of the residence and a search warrant was sought so that officers could enter the home to locate him.  Miller eventually cooperated and was detained.

Property from several of the nearby crimes was recovered at the Miller residence.  His parents are not involved in this criminal activity and cooperated with our investigation.

It is challenging for patrol officers to conduct in-depth investigations as they continue to respond to new calls for service.  Officer Brandland, and the officers that assisted him, did an exceptional job in quickly solving this crime spree.
