A Graffiti cleanup project is slated for May 10-11 in the Central Business District neighborhood.
Graffiti is considered a nuisance per Bellingham Municipal code 10.28.020 (L). This code requires property owners to remove the graffiti within 7 days. Should a property owner know of the graffiti and not remove it in a timely fashion a maximum fine of $1500 could be levied.
Should a property owner be unable to remove the graffiti or needs assistance in removing the graffiti they should call Officer Jeremiah Smith for advice or assistance at (360)778-8760.
To accomplish compliance with the City Code and maintain a clean and pleasing neighborhood environment, a juvenile work team will be in the Central Business District this weekend for the purpose of painting over graffiti.
The cleanup sites that are targeted for this weekend are preselected and in cooperation with the property owners who are victimized by graffiti vandals.
The juvenile cleanup team will be supervised by representatives of the Community Justice Center.
Future graffiti cleanup projects will be taking place throughout the summer in various neighborhoods in Bellingham where a need has been discovered.
This graffiti cleanup project is a co-operative effort of the following organizations; Sherwin-Williams Company who is supplying the painting materials, Whatcom County Health Department Household Hazardous Waste Disposal who is supplying the paint, the Community Justice Center who is supplying the labor and the Bellingham Police Department.
For further information on this or other graffiti cleanup projects or to notify the Bellingham Police Department of graffiti sites please call Officer Jeremiah Smith at (360)778-8760.
