City officials were unable to determine the source of a natural gas-like smell that drifted over parts of Bellingham late in the afternoon of May 6. Beginning at 5:45 p.m., 9-1-1 dispatchers began to receive reports of a natural gas-like smell in the Edgemoor neighborhood. Over the next 45 minutes, additional reports were received from the Fairhaven, Downtown, and Lettered Street neighborhoods. Neither field investigations by fire crews nor inquiries to local industries and utilities turned up any clues to the source of the smell.
