Bellingham (WA) Bellingham Police Officers responded to a Hit and Run collision at 1:47 a.m. this morning, November 24, 2013, at the intersection of E. Chestnut Street and Railroad Avenue. Police found a critically injured 25 year old Ferndale woman who had been hit by a car. The car and driver fled the scene prior to police arrival.
Witnesses to the collision stated that the driver of the suspect vehicle was operating the car in a reckless manner completing a “donut," hitting a car and then striking the woman. The suspect vehicle also collided with a parked vehicle as it was speeding away from the scene. Police believe the driver was fully aware of what he did, demonstrating his total indifference to human life.
The woman was legally crossing a well-lighted street in a marked crosswalk when the suspect vehicle sped through the area and struck her. She sustained life threatening injuries and was treated initially at St Joseph Hospital and has since been flown to Harborview Medical Center. The victim is in critical condition. Her family is aware of the situation and remains in contact with our agency.
At about 9:50 a.m. this morning the suspect vehicle was located by a Western Washington University Police Department officer abandoned in a university parking lot. The vehicle has been impounded to be processed for evidence related to this crime. Bellingham Police Traffic Officers and Detectives worked through the early morning hours and eventually developed a suspect in this case and broadcast that information to other law enforcement agencies. At about 10:10 a.m. this morning Custer resident Cory Ira Mezo (2/23/1984) was located by Ferndale Police Department officers in their jurisdiction. Mezo was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail on the following criminal violations:
1) Vehicular Assault
2) Hit and Run Injury
3) Hit and Run (attended vehicle)
4) Hit and Run (unattended vehicle)
5) Driving While License Suspended/Revoked 1st Degree
