The Bellingham Police Department is currently recruiting for new officers, and Police Chief Cliff Cook hopes to attract as many applicants as possible. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Sept. 9, 2013.

“We are looking for men and women with honesty and integrity to serve their community,” Cook said. “Being selected to serve with the Bellingham Police Department requires a unique combination of skills, good judgment, self-confidence and compassion, so we are working to recruit as many applicants as possible to find those qualities.”

Cook said the department employs 110 commissioned officers. The testing process for Entry Level Police Officer is currently open and is expected to be used to fill two positions by the end of this year.

Qualifications for these positions includes being a U.S. citizen who is at least 21 years old, having a valid Washington State driver’s license and at least two years of college coursework. Those selected for consideration must meet certain physical, health and vision requirements, and pass drug, psychological and criminal history screenings. Specific qualifications and other information and application materials are available on the City website.

Police officers enforce state and municipal laws, protect life and property, prevent and deter crime, protect the rights of all citizens and preserve the public peace. Specific duties include patrol activities, inspecting and reporting violations of the law, community policing, apprehending violators and giving immediate assistance to citizens in emergency situations.

“Our officers are problem solvers and work within a team environment to help keep Bellingham a great place to live, work, play and raise a family,” Cook said.
