Attempted Murder of Police Officers

Bellingham, Washington-This is a joint media release from Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo and Bellingham Police Chief Clifford Cook:

On August 26, 2013 at approximately 5:05 PM Bellingham Police arrived at the Villa Inn located at 212 Samish Way to serve a Mental Health Pick-up Order issued earlier today in Whatcom County.  As officers contacted the 54 year old white male, he displayed a shotgun and fired at the officers.  Officers returned fire wounding the male.  Officers were not struck during the exchange of gunfire.  The male was subsequently transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital.  No civilians were injured during the incident. 

 The investigation is currently being conducted in accordance with county-wide protocols established under the Whatcom County Law Enforcement Mutual Aid Response Team

(“LEMART”) agreement.  This investigative team is comprised of experienced local  investigators.  The investigation is being led by the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.  

 No further information is available for release at this time.
