NOTE TO EDITORS:  A publication-ready downloadable photograph of Stan Snapp is available on the city's website.

Long-time Bellingham resident and former City firefighter Stan Snapp was sworn in to his position on the Bellingham City Council at a ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at City Hall. Snapp was elected in the 2007 General Election to serve the remaining two years of the late Joan Beardsley's term representing Ward 4.

Snapp said Bellingham currently faces many opportunities and challenges.

"I am honored to fill the remaining two years of Joan Beardsley's term and represent the citizens of Bellingham as we take advantage of those opportunities and address our challenges," he said.  "I will lead initiatives to successfully plan for priorities and make well-considered, thoughtful decisions especially regarding my key issues of safe drinking water, responsible growth and fiscally responsible choices.

"I have the energy and motivation to ensure that the things we all cherish about Bellingham will be maintained, with special attention and focus to policy level decisions needed to begin the restoration of our Lake Whatcom Reservoir," he said. "I've proven myself a leader in the past and will continue to lead in the future."

Snapp is a 1971 graduate of Western Washington University. He served with the Bellingham Fire Department for 25 years, including 17 years as Division Chief responsible for training and facilities, and counts among his achievements managing the construction of the Broadway Fire Station, on time and under budget. Throughout those years, Snapp served as a volunteer and board member with numerous organizations including United Way and Mt. Baker Red Cross. Since his retirement ten years ago, he has served on City advisory groups including the Greenways Committee, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and the Lake Whatcom Watershed Advisory Board. Snapp raised five children and has 10 grandchildren. He and his wife, Marian, have made their home in the Silver Beach Neighborhood for the past 16 years.

Snapp replaces interim Ward 4 representative Don Gischer, who was appointed by the Bellingham City Council in April 2007 to fill the vacancy left by the passing of Joan Beardsley.

Tuesday's swearing in ceremony for Snapp and new Bellingham Mayor Dan Pike was aired live on BTV10 and is scheduled to repeat several times in the coming weeks. It also will be available to view on the City's website.
