At 1:18 p.m. this afternoon crews from Bellingham Fire Department were dispatched to an apartment complex located at 1301 Woodstock Way in the Sunset Drive area of Bellingham for a reported fire. Crews found a three-story apartment approximately 40-feet by 100-feet with flames shooting through the roof in the northeast corner. Despite intense efforts by firefighters, fanned by a light breeze and low humidity the fire quickly spread throughout the attic area. Fire crews from North Whatcom Fire and Rescue, South Whatcom Fire Authority, and Whatcom County Fire Protection District 8 assisted with containing the fire to the building of origin. While there were no reported injuries in the fire, some of the occupants' pets were not initially accounted for, as well as several families will have had catastrophic losses and be displaced from their homes. Fire crews remain on scene controlling hot spots and assisting fire investigators working to establish cause and dollar loss.
While the building was built compliant with fire codes at the time of its construction and has sprinklers and smoke detectors installed, fire codes at that time did not require attic spaces to be alarmed or have sprinklers installed.
