Bellingham Mayor Kelli Linville will introduce new Bellingham Police Chief Clifford Cook to the City Council and the Bellingham community at a presentation scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 at the Bellingham City Council meeting. The meeting is open to the public, televised live on BTV10 and live streamed on the City website.
Cook, 57, has 36 years of professional law enforcement experience, including extensive experience as a senior administrator in large and mid-sized police departments. He most recently served as Chief of Police for the City of Vancouver (Wash.) Police Department, a position he held for five years after serving as a deputy police chief and other leadership and staff positions with the City of Fort Worth, Texas.
Cook is married, and his family is expected to join him in Bellingham in March.
Cook was selected after a competitive nation-wide search and interview process that included area law enforcement leaders, City department heads, police department employees and others. Linville completed formal hiring steps in January, including completing a thorough background check and additional state requirements, and welcomed Cook to City employment on Monday, Feb. 4.
Linville said Cook’s leadership and management experience, ethical and respectful demeanor and expertise in all facets of law enforcement were among the many qualities he demonstrated throughout the selection process and in her subsequent interactions with him.
“Cliff is a strong, steady, ethical professional with the experience and skills necessary to lead us into the future as our Police Chief, according to what we learned throughout our extensive hiring process,” Linville said. “My many interactions with him since then have confirmed these key strengths and the breadth of leadership and experience in all aspects of law enforcement he brings to Bellingham.”
“I look forward to introducing him to Bellingham and expect him to be a visible presence and important contributor to our City government and our community,” she added.
