Stubborn fire damages pedestrian/cycling bridge

Posted: November 24, 2012 4:41:19 PM PST

A late night fire on Friday, November 23, severely damaged a downtown pedistrian/cycling bridge spanning Whatcom Creek. Nearby residents noticed the fire shortly after 11 p.m. and said that the fire quickly spread across the bridge creating 10'-15' high flames. The residents provided a female living under the bridge with assistance to escape the fire.

Two fire companies arrrived, quickly knocked down the main body of the fire, and then spent the next four hours pouring copious amounts of water on the bridge in an attempt to completely extinguish the blaze. At daylight, signs of fire were still visible leading to a six hour operation involving the Fire, Public Works, and Parks Departments to finally extinguish a particularly stubborn fire in a beam underneath the concrete bridge deck.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Originally part of a railway crossing running north from York to Ohio Streets, the bridge is closed until repairs can be made
