Bellingham Police were asking for your help in locating a suspect in a domestic assault. Bellingham Police were called to a home in the 4200 block of Northwest Avenue Sunday evening 5/15/11 after the father of the suspect ran from his home to flag down a passerby and asked for help.
The responding officers learned that the 60 year old father was allegedly assaulted after attempted to break up an argument between his son and girlfriend. The victim told officers that he tried to call 911 from a phone inside his home but the suspect stopped him by breaking the phone. Following the initial assault, the suspect allegedly attempted to force the victim into a bedroom but the victim broke away and ran from the home barefoot to get some help. A passerby saw the man running and called 911.
During the assault, the son allegedly told his father that he would shoot him if he called the police. Meanwhile, the suspect’s girlfriend was hiding in the bathroom of the home, she was not harmed.
Prior to the officer’s arrival, the suspect went back into the home. The suspect had access to guns inside. A search warrant was served on the home with the assistance of the Bellingham S.W.A.T team. The suspect apparently left the home prior to police arrival.
Bellingham Police were looking for Mark A. Ortiz age 28. Since the assault, police were checking the residence in attempts to locate Ortiz. On Tuesday, 5/17.11 at out 2:00 P.M, officer spotted Ortiz outside of the home. Officers were able to arrest Ortiz without incident. There were no weapons located. Ortiz was booked into the Whatcom County Jail for domestic assault, felony harassment, unlawful imprisonment, malicious mischief and interfering with reporting domestic violence.
