N1H1 Flu Antivirals Arrive in Whatcom County

NOVEL H1N1 FLU ANTIVIRALS ARRIVE IN WHATCOM COUNTY
BELLINGHAM, WA—Whatcom County received its initial allocation of antivirals today. These will be used in accordance with federal guidelines, as necessary, for treatment of ill individuals and under some circumstances for treatment of people who have been exposed to a person with novel influenza A (H1N1) infection.
This first shipment represents 25% of the county’s total allocation, enough to treat approximately 6,840 individuals. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released one quarter of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) as a first response to the novel H1N1 influenza virus.
Along with the anitvirals, the Whatcom shipment included protective equipment (masks, gowns, gloves, etc) to be used in the event we experience a shortage of these supplies in our community.
The Whatcom County Health Department (WCHD) will be issuing guidance to physicians about approved usages of the antiviral medication. WCHD is also in the process of contacting local pharmacies to develop agreements for distribution of the medication.
The Health Department still wants to remind those who are ill to avoid contact with others to prevent the spread of influenza. The public can easily prevent the spread of influenza by regular hand washing with water or hand sanitizer and by covering your cough.
